Day 1 August, 28 – Arrival to Lamezia Terme – Cosenza
Benvenuti in Calabria! Upon arrival at Lamezia Terme International Airport you’ll be welcomed by our local tour leader. Our well-equipped touring bus will take us to our 4-star hotel in Cosenza . Welcome dinner and overnight.
Day 2 August, 29 – Rossano
Breakfast and departure for an excursion to Rossano, renowned for its Byzantine history and its natural licorice. Our day will include a visit of the old town with its Baroque cathedral and newly refurbished Diocesan Museum, home to the Codex Purpureus Roassanenis, a rare 6th-century illuminated manuscript. Lunch in a local restaurant, and a tour of the world-famous Amarelli Licorice Museum. Return to hotel, dinner and overnight.
Day 3 August, 30 – Sila – Cosenza
Breakfast and departure for the Sila mountain plateau, known as Italy’s great forest. We will stop at a protected nature reserve and walk amongst the Giants of Fallistro, majestic centuries-old pinewood trees. Return back to Cosenza, an attractive old town and stop for a local aperitif. In the afternoon we will stroll through the old town for a visit to its historical centre. Return to hotel, dinner and overnight.
Day 4 August, 31 – Civita – Pollino Mountains
Breakfast and departure for a day in the Pollino Mountains. We will visit Civita, an Arbereshe village set in the dramatic Raganello Gorge with its spectacular Devil’s Bridge. Founded in the 15th century, Civita preserves its Albanian heritage through language, its original Italian-Albanian Church with Mass in the Byzantine rite and folkloristic “talking houses.” We’ll enjoy a delicious lunch in this village, another of Italy’s “Most Beautiful”! Return to hotel, dinner on your own and overnight.
Day 5 September, 01 – Scilla – Reggio Calabria
Breakfast, checkout and departure for Scilla, known for the legendary promontory of Homer’s Odyssey. We will stroll through “Chianalea,” Scilla’s picturesque fishing quarter, where our lunch will feature swordfish, the local specialty. We arrive in Reggio Calabria in the afternoon and check in to 4* hotel in Reggio, dinner on your own and overnight.
Day 6 Sepember, 02 — Reggio Calabria
Breakfast. In the morning, we will have a walking tour of the historic center and learn its history, see Greek and Roman ruins, the cathedral, the Aragon castle and numerous examples of Liberty-style architecture for which Reggio is noted. Vsit of the National Archeological Museum where the famous Riace Bronzes are exhibited. Lunch on your own. Enjoy the afternoon and evening at your leisure. Take a walk down the elegant pedestrian-only shopping street or along the seafront, described by poet Gabriele D’Annunzio as “the most beautiful kilometer of Italy.” Dinner n a local restaurant and overnight.
Day 7 September, 03 – Bova – Pentedattilo
After breakfast we will move to the Area Grecanica, the Greek area of Calabria. We will visit Bova, the last town to abandon the Orthodox rite in the 16th century and where people still speak a Greek language. Bova is one of only eighteen villages designated as a Jewel of Italy. Lunch in a nearby agriturismo set in a Bergamot Orchard. On the way back to Reggio, short stop at the ghost town of Pentedattilo. Return to hotel, dinner on your own and overnight.
Day 8 September, 04 – Gerace – Casignana
Breakfast, checkout and departure for Calabria’s Ionian coast, where we will visit Villa Casignana, the remains of an opulent Roman complex, complete with thermal baths and exquisite mosaic floors. Following lunch of regional dishes in a local family restaurant, we will tour medieval Gerace, another of Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages. Continue to Marina di Gioiosa Jonica, check in to our 4* hotel in front of the beach, dinner at the hotel and overnight.
Day 9 September, 05 – Relax on the beach
Breakfast. Day at your leisure to relax on the beach. Dinner in a local pizzeria. Overnight.
Day 10 September, 06 – Relax on the beach
Breakfast and day at your leisure to relax on the beach or shopping in town. Late in the evening we’ll move to Mammola for a dinner based on Baccala’ and Stockfis in a local restaurant. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.
Day 11 September, 07 – Gioiosa Jonica – Badolato cooking class
Breakfast and depart to Gioiosa Jonica. We will walk to Gioiosa’s colorful food market. Continue to to Badolato, an old medieval village perched on a hill at 250 mt. above sea level. On the way to the old village we’ll stop at local farmhouse for our coking lesson. We’ll start our cooking class preparing local Calabrian dishes and end with our prepared lunch based on genuine homemade food by our chef Vittoria. After lunch we’ll move to the old centre of Badolato for a nice walk trough the narrow streets and a visit of the “Chiesa di Santa Caterina” and the “Chiesa dell’Immacolata”. Return to Marina Gioiosa Jonica for the feast of San Nicodemo. Overnight.
Day 12, September, 08 Stilo – Catanzaro Lido
Breakfast checkout and departure for Stilo a town of ancient origin. The old center houses the Cattolica, one of the best preserved Byzantine churches, the Baroque Church of St. Francis d ‘Assisi and the Cathedral, which dates back to the thirteenth century. Light lunch. In the afternoon continue to Catanzaro Lido, check in to our 4 stars hotel in front of the beach, dinner and overnight.
Day 13, September, 09 Tropea – Pizzo
Breakfast and departure to Tropea, Calabria’s most famous seaside town, known not only for its spectacular setting on the Tyrrhenian Sea, but also for its sweet red onions. Free time for shopping or enjoy the beach. In the afternoon, we will visit Pizzo Calabro to admire the evocative cave church of Piedigrotta and the Murat Castle, as well as to enjoy Pizzo’s special gelato creation. Dinner in a local retaurant. Overnight.
Day 14 September, 10 Relax on the beach.
Day at your leisure to relax on the beach. Farewell dinner and overnight.
Day 15 September, 11 Departure, transfer to Lamezia Terme Airport.
Breakfast, check out and departure to Lamezia Terme airport. Arrivederci .
